“Kids! Get away from the window!” David shouted.

But it was too late, by the time Robbie and Simon had a chance to comprehend what their father had just shouted to them the window had caved in under the force of the darkness. Large shards of glass rained down upon the two boys, they never stood a chance. Another vibration passed through the earth, this time accompanied by a large creaking sound like the hull of a ship scraping against rock; loud enough to drown out Emma’s screams of anguish. What had been a peaceful Sunday morning had turned into a nightmare. It was as though they were in the middle of a hurricane, the wind and the noise was frightening. And then it was gone, and the light of the day with it. Emma and David crouched in the darkness over their sons slashed bodies, blood readily flowed over the carpet; they cried hysterically.

Outside the light had been devoured, the sun was gone only to be replaced with the sinister blackness of an utterly alien origin and deep within it’s claustrophobic depths a large arachnid form had just been born unto the world, rapidly making its way through the darkness, towards a house a few miles away. It had dragged itself from beyond the dimensions of sanity and fell to the hard floor of the lab, screaming. Its slender, pale body supported by eight long spiny legs, which tapped and scraped on the floor as it moved. Rapidly it scurried from the confines of the lab and out into the countryside, already the outside world had been plunged into a nightmarish darkness. With a speed disturbing to witness it ran through the darkness, its destination already established.

That night I slept badly. As with most nights I was plagued with nightmares, only these were worse than normal. I would be lying in my bed, the room very dimly lit, even though the lamp was on. It was as though the surrounding darkness was swallowing the light. The curtains were open, outside was black, as though the windows themselves had been painted. Every so often the world was very briefly lit up, as though a bolt of lightning had shot across the skies. In that brief glimpse I saw nothing I recognized, it was a barren landscape. Strange structures lined the horizon, like trees, but huge. The sky was red, a dark bloody red. Each time the outside lit up the strange tree like things appeared to be closer, slowly edging towards me. As with previous nightmares I could sense the dark shape, could feel its hate and contempt. It was so much closer now, I could almost see it. Something had started dragging itself up the stairs, I couldn’t see the top of the stairs due to the darkness, but I could hear it, coming closer and closer. Everything was coming closer. The tree things, the dark shape and now the thing on the stairs. I couldn’t breath; my heart was pounding through my chest, threatening to just give up any second. And then I saw it, clumsily staggering into the bedroom. Tall, twisted, thin and white, a black liquid running down its torso. I couldn’t scream, I couldn’t move. And then it was upon me. It bent over just mere inches from my face. And then finally the scream came, and continued long after I had sat bolt upright in my bed soaked in sweat. The face on the creature was John’s, like it had been ripped off and just stuck on. It was bruised, cut and bloodied, one eye remained; it was aware and staring at me. John’s mouth opened, releasing a black sticky mess which dripped onto my face, and screamed, my god did he scream, the same scream we had heard in the lab after test 119.  And all around the darkness rapidly swallowed us all.

She clenched her fists and swung her arms, they were everywhere, in the air fluttering about her head, crawling on her, on her Stasis chamber, they were all over everything. Thousands of them, like moths only larger – about the size of a fist, but what disturbed her the most was their faces, they looked almost human but with red eyes, small red, nasty looking eyes. These creatures weren't in anyway graceful, their wings were far too big for their bodies which made them fly about in the most peculiar of ways and their limbs were grotesque, spindly little appendages, spiked at the joints and ending in strange looking pincers. They were nasty to behold but didn't seem hostile towards her, but she couldn't bear to be within their swarm. For each one she hit, or crushed with her fist ten more would take their place. She was terrified, tears were streaming down her face, she tried to scream out but couldn't and even if she could the almost deafening 'buzzing' sound they made would probably drown her out. She crawled out from her Stasis chamber, batting wildly with her fists all the while, she slipped and crashed to the floor; hitting her head hard. The last thing she remembered was watching those strange insect-like beasts circling overhead.

Hours could of passed when she finally came to. Her head was pounding, she lifted her hand to her forehead and winced as it brushed against a quite sizeable bump. She felt moisture on her finger tips, she had been bleeding. She slowly sat up and rested herself against the side of the Stasis chamber. The room she was in was silent, nothing moved. She remembered the strange insects that had swarmed all over her. Where were they? There had been thousands of them.
